DISTRIBUTION: N. E. Pakistan; Nepal; N. India to Sikkim.
COMMENT: Formerly included in Maxomys ; see Musser et al., 1979, J. Mammal., 60:592-606. Musser, 1975, Am. Mus . Novit., 2525:55, discussed the scope of this species. The limits and relationships of niviventer and its allies, in particular fulvescens and confucianus , need clarification; see Marshall, 1977, in Lekagul and McNeely, pp. 402-403, and Musser, 1981, Bull. Am. Mus . Nat. Hist., 168(3):237-256. Includes lepcha, monticola, and niveiventer; see Musser, 1981:237.
