TYPE LOCALITY: South Africa, Port Natal (=Durban) .
DISTRIBUTION: W., E., and S. Africa.
COMMENT: Includes coucha, kulmei , and longicaudatus Noack, 1887 ; subgenus Mastomys ; see Misonne, 1974, Part 6: 24-25; also see comment under Mystromys albicaudatus (Cricetidae) . Corbet and Hill, 1980:177, and Swanepoel et al., 1980:160, considered this species an aggregate of at least two sibling species; also see Hallett, 1979, S. Afr. J. Sci., 75:413-415, Gordon, 1978, J. Zool. Lond., 186:397-401, Green et al., 1978, Am. J. Trop. Med. Hyg., 27:627-629, and Lyons et al., 1977, Heredity, 38: 197-200.
