Thripsaphis foxtonensis Cottier, 1953 . Specimens of this aphid species were first collected on Carex ternaria at Foxton (WI) by WR Boyce and W Cottier in November 1947. It is also found in New South Wales, Australia on Carex gaudichaudiana (Eastop 1966) , and is common on its host plant, especially at the base of the young leaves in the centre of plants (Cottier 1953). Wingless and winged parthenogentic females have been described. Cottier (1953) considered this a native New Zealand species but our consensus is that it is an adventive species to New Zealand. There are no known close relatives of this species in the southern hemisphere, and it was perhaps introduced into New Zealand and Australia on introduced sedges from California.
