Several syntype specimens were located however it is unclear how many specimens Gorham (1881) had access to. One specimen also had a red type label and is therefore designated as the lectotype, while the other seven specimens are designated as paralectotypes. Labels for the designated lectotype specimen are as follows:

“ SYN-/ TYPE ” “Type” “ S. Geronimo / 3000 ft. /Champion” “ Photinus /picticollis/Gorham.” “ B.C.A.Col. III.(2)./ Photinus /picticollis,/Gorh.”. A red label is added with the following text: “ LECTOTYPE / Photinus picticollis Gorham /Designated by/Martin and Powell 2020” .
