status

Euastrum bahiense Kurt Först. & F.Eckert (1964: 349) ( Figs 14–16 View FIGURES 2–27 )

Cell dimensions: length 36–38 μm, breadth 22 μm, isthmus 8,5 μm

Habitat characteristics: Ephemeral puddle in the mountain.

Material examined: HUEFS 244147.

Notes: The main morphological features of Euastrum bahiense are its trapeziform semicells with cell walls uniformly punctate. This species has only been mentioned once, and only for Brazil ( Förster 1964), from material collected in the states of Bahia and Goiás. It represents another rare species and only a few specimens were seen in the samples studied.

Due to its very shallow apical incision and trapeziform semicells, this species can also be interpreted as belonging to the genus Cosmarium (e.g., C. tatricum Racib. [1885: 78] ). In spite of their similar cell dimensions, the latter species differs mainly by having concave semicells (lateral margins and apices).
