Range:— Hispaniola; Mesoamerica, Venezuela to northwestern Argentina; southeastern Brazil. In Bolivia recorded from CO, LP, TA, and SC.
Ecology:— Common; terrestrial humid forests, often at forest margins, clearings, and scrub, or on damp banks in ravines or along streams; 2300–4000 m.
Notes:— Sometimes treated as conspecific with A. filix-femina (L.) Roth from North America and Eurasia or with A. arcuatum Liebm. of Mexico and Guatemala. A variable taxon that may include more than one species.
