Iliodiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1929 View in CoL

Iliodiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1929: 15 View in CoL . Nomen novum for Cyclorhamphus [sic] fuliginosus Tschudi, 1838 View in CoL (sensu A. Lutz, 1929).

Grypiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1935 View in CoL — Bokermann 1966: 69.

Current name. Cycloramphus fuliginosus Tschudi, 1838 View in CoL — Bokermann 1951: 81.

Synonymy. Synonymized with Cycloramphus fuliginosus Tschudi, 1838 by Bokermann (1951: 81) and confirmed by Bokermann (1966: 69) and Heyer (1983: 266, 306).

Types. Not designated ( Miranda-Ribeiro 1929; P. Miranda-Ribeiro 1953; Heyer 1983).

It is clear that the new species of Miranda-Ribeiro (1929) (which he called nomen novum) is the same that A. Lutz (1929) considered as C. fuliginosus , and his description of Iliodiscus lutzi was based on the description and figures of A. Lutz (1929). We considered that all specimens examined by A. Lutz for his study, collected prior to 1929, are all syntypes of C. fuliginosus A. Lutz, 1929 ( ICZN, 1999: “Article 72.1.1. Type series: all the specimens on which the author established a nominal species-group taxon ...; in the absence of holotype designation, or the designation of syntypes, or the subsequent designation of a lectotype, all are syntypes and collectively they constitute the name-bearing type”; “72.4.1.1. For a nominal species or subspecies established before 2000, any evidence, published or unpublished, may be taken into account to determine what specimens constitute the type series”). Consequently, the type specimens of I. lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1929 are the same called of C. fuliginosus by A. Lutz, 1929 ( ICZN, 1999: “72.4.2. If a new nominal species-group taxon is based, in whole or in part, on a published misidentification by an earlier author, the type series consists of or includes the specimen or specimens which had been misidentified, whether the later author refers to them directly or through an illustration or a description”).

Lectotype. By present designation: AL-MN 1494 ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ), adult male, collected at Sumaré (22º57’05”S, 43º14’12”W; Datum WGS 84; 770 m a.s.l.), Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by B. Lutz and J. Venâncio, on 21 January 1928. GoogleMaps

Paralectotypes. By present designation. All from the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: AL-MN 1495–1496 , collected with the lectotype . AL-MN 296 , collected at Tijuca, by A. Lutz & J. Venâncio, on 25 December 1922 . AL-MN 553 , collected at Paineiras, Corcovado, by A. Lutz, on 13 November 1923 . AL-MN 530–532 , collected at Sumaré, by A. Lutz, on 01 October 1923 . AL-MN 1691–1692 , collected at Tijuca, by B. Lutz & J. Venâncio, in October 1928 . AL-MN 564 , 566–568 , collected at Sumaré, Corcovado, Tijuca, by A. Lutz & J. Venâncio, on 13 November 1923 .

Referred specimens. In the AL-MN collection, we found the specimens AL-MN 296 a, AL-MN 1497 (dried juveniles), AL-MN 4301 (two dried tadpoles and two dried juveniles), and AL-MN 4281–4286 (“Tadpoles reared in laboratory”, dried) which are currently impossible to associate to a species. In view of that, we refrained in to designate those specimens as paralectotypes of Iliodiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1929 .

Measurements of the lectotype. SVL 54.5; HL 17.8; HW 23.3; IND 4.5; END 4.7; ED 7.0; UEW 3.7; IOD 7.5; THL 27.0; TL 24.0; FL 31.1; TA 13.9.

Type locality. Referred by Miranda-Ribeiro (1929: 16) as “Parte baixa da Serra de Petropolis, (Lutz)” [freely translated as “Low part of the Petrópolis Range, (Lutz)”]. This reference is a copy of part of the distribution given by A. Lutz (1929: 9) in the list of synonyms of “ Cyclorhamphus fuliginosus Tschudi, 1838 ”, that is “montanhas do Rio de Janeiro e parte baixa da Serra de Petrópolis (Lutz)” [freely translated as “mountains of the Rio de Janeiro and low part of the Petrópolis Range (Lutz) ”]. However, Bokermann (1966: 69) correctly pointed that the description of Miranda-Ribeiro (1929) was entirely based on A. Lutz (1929) and, so, the type locality must accompany this description, clearly located in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro by A. Lutz (1929). According to Bokermann (1966: 69) and to the present designation of the lectotype for Iliodiscus lutzi Miranda-Ribeiro, 1929 , the type locality of the species is here restricted to Sumaré (22º57’05”S, 43º14’12”W; Datum WGS 84; 770 m a.s.l.), Municipality of Rio de Janeiro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Remarks. Miranda-Ribeiro (1929: 15) recognized as new the species treated by A. Lutz (1929) as C. fuliginosus , although had utilized the expression “ nomen novum ”. Miranda-Ribeiro (1929) quoted textually that this is the species called by A. Lutz (1929) as C. fuliginosus and referred his original figures and, in quotes, part of the description.

Although Miranda-Ribeiro (1929) defined as “Procedência: Parte baixa da Serra de Petropolis (Lutz)” (freely translated as “Procedence: Low part of the Petrópolis Range (Lutz)”), this is only part of the occurrence of the species. For A. Lutz (1929: 10), “ Cyclorhamphus fuliginosus ” was “... a única espécie com pés palmados que se encontra nas montanhas em que se encosta a cidade do Rio de Janeiro.” and “... o verdadeiro fuliginosus , limitado às montanhas perto da Capital Federal.” (freely translated as “... the only species with webbed feet that is found in the mountains where leans the city of Rio de Janeiro.” and “... the true fuliginosus , limited to the mountains near the Federal District [Rio de Janeiro].”) However, neither A. Lutz (1929) nor Miranda-Ribeiro (1929) cited any specimen belonging to the species.
