Genus Phytosciara Frey, 1942 View in CoL View at ENA
Type species: Sciara halterata Lengersdorf, 1926: 250 , fig. 12. Selected literature: Tuomikoski (1960): 103–110; Mohrig & Menzel (1994): 167–210; Hippa & Vilkamaa (1991): 113–155; Vilkamaa (1996): 1–57; Menzel & Mohrig (2000): 429–451.
Comments. Phytosciara s. str. is not species-rich. It is known from the Palaearctic region as well as one species from Papua New Guinea (Mohrig 1999). Dolichosciara is more species-rich and distributed in the Holarctic region, reaching the Neotropical region ( Mohrig 2003) and Australasia/Oceania (Mohrig 1999; Steffan 1969; Mohrig et al. 2017). The subgenus Prosciara is species-rich in the Eastern Palaearctic, in the Oriental region, particularly in the Indomalayan subregion ( Vilkamaa & Hippa 1996), and five species are known from the western Palaearctic as well ( Hippa & Vilkamaa 1991; Menzel & Mohrig 2000). Mohrig et al. (2013) reported two species, Ph. multisetifera (Pettey) and Ph. ornata (Winnertz) of the subgenus Dolichosciara , and one species, Ph. prosciaroides (Tuomikoski) , of the subgenus Prosciara from North America. Phytosciara greylockensis was reported by Eiseman et al. (2018) as the first North American representative of Phytosciara s. str.
