Type locality. Mount Egmont.

Broun number: 1730.

Type material examined. 3 exx. Lectotype (NHM, here validated): card-mounted, genitalia mounted on glass slide pinned together with the specimen, “LECTO- \ TYPE” [round label with blue border], “1730” [in Broun’s hand], “Egmont”, “New Zealand. [red underline] \ Broun Coll. \ Brit. Mus. \ 1922-482.”, “ aethiops ” [in Broun’s hand], “Lectotype \ Cyphon aethiops \ Broun \ det. T. Nyholm 1981” [in Nyholm’s hand]. Paralectotype (NHM, here validated): card-mounted, “PARA- \ LECTO- \ TYPE” [round label with blue border], “1730” [in Broun’s hand], “Egmont”, “New Zealand. [red underline] \ Broun Coll. \ Brit. Mus. \ 1922-482.”, “Paralectotype \ Cyphon aethiops \ Broun \ det. T. Nyholm 1981” [in Nyholm’s hand]. Paralectotype (NHM, here validated): card-mounted, genitalia mounted on glass slide pinned together with the specimen, “PARA- \ LECTO- \ TYPE” [round label with blue border], “1730” [in Nyholm’s hand], “Egmont” [in Nyholm’s hand], “New Zealand. Remarks. Broun (1886) examined an unknown number of specimens collected from Mount Egmont at an altitude of 3200 ft.
