Venter. Sternal shield smooth, posterior margin slightly concave; distances between ST1-ST3 58 (55–60) and ST2-ST2 55. Genital shield smooth; distance between ST5-ST5 47 (45–48). Ventrianal shield smooth, vase-shaped, anterior margin straight, 88 (85–90) long, 43 wide at level of ZV2 and 48 (48–50) wide at level of anus; with 3 pairs of preanal setae (JV1, JV2 and ZV2); ZV1, ZV3 and JV5 on soft cuticle; JV5 45, serrate; preanal pores posterior and about in longitudinal line with JV2. Two pairs of metapodal shields.

Locality and type material. Holotype female and 1 paratype female: Lambayeque, Chiclayo, Monsefú (6° 32' 19" S, 79° 52' 45" W), 6-VIII-2006, on Brugmansia arborea, A. D. Guanilo , deposited at ESALQ- USP. Two paratype females: Lima, Cañete, La Victoria - Quilmaná (12° 59' 28" S, 76° 24' 1" W), 21-VII- 2006, on B. arborea, A. D. Guanilo. deposited at MHN.

Etymology. This new species is named after Nesly Ortega, biologist of “Museo de Historia Natural Javier Prado”, Lima, Peru, for her valuable collaboration in this work.

Remarks. Phytoseius leonmexicanus (Hirschmann) differs from P. ortegae n.sp. by having longer peritreme (extending to seta j1) and shorter setae j4, j5 and j6 (approximately 0.7, 0.5 and 0.4 times as long as in this new species, respectively).
