Cephaloscymnus zimmermanni zimmermanni Crotch, 1873
Material Examined. MASSACHUSETTS: Worcester County, Leominster State Forest, 24-VII- 2012. New state record. The specimen ( Fig. 1 View Fig ) was discovered in bycatch from an Asian longhorned beetle trap. The trap was one of a series that ran through variable stands of relatively mature hardwood and softwood trees with generally moderate understory growth. The specimen has been retained as a voucher specimen in the insect collection at the USDA-ARS North Central Agricultural Research Laboratory , Brookings , South Dakota, USA. This specimen from Massachusetts was collected roughly 300 km from the nearest recorded collection site for C. zimmermanni zimmermanni in Montclair , New Jersey ( Gordon 1985), and thus represents the northernmost record of this subspecies.
Gordon (1985) states that prey of Cephaloscymnus species is unknown. Additional sampling is recommended for C. zimmermanni zimmermanni to further delineate its geographic distribution and to determine its prey. Moreover, incidental collection of the Massachusetts specimen further demonstrates that trap bycatch may yield specimens of interest beyond the focal species and should provide impetus for wider sharing of bycatch with other scientists (New 2010).
