Asplenium serra Langsd. & Fisch., Pl. Voy. Russes Monde View in CoL 1: 16. 1810, t. 19. 1818.
Range:— Antilles; southern Mexico to northeastern Argentina, Uruguay, and Bolivia (BE, CO, LP, SC).
Ecology:— Common; epiphytic, terrestrial, and saxicolous in humid forests; 500–2350(3350) m. Typically occurs at lower elevations than A. achalense .
Notes:— In most floras, this species is broadly defined to include A. achalense , A. incurvatum , A. micropaleatum , and A. mosetenense , but these are here considered to represent a complex of closely related species that is in need of further study ( Kessler & Smith 2006). Jonas (2011) conducted a detailed biosystematic study of the group, finding that A. serra is clearly distinct from the other four species (see under A. achalense ).
