Cerconychia trilobata View in CoL sp. nov.
( Figs. 1–5 View FIGURE 1 View FIGURE 2 View FIGURE 3 View FIGURE 4 View FIGURE 5 )
Adult habitus. General color brown. Head mostly yellow brown, except the area lateral to the posterior ocelli paler, with a brown triangular marking and a pair of small, elliptical and yellow brown spots in frontal region; a long, large black to brown subrectangular spot extends from the anterior ocellus to posterior area of occiput; stem and Y-arms of suture dark brown; head as wide as pronotum. Biocellate, distance between ocelli about 2.5X as long as diameter of an ocellus. Antennae dark brown, scape brown; palpi brown. Pronotum general pale brown but lateral and posteri- or margins dark brown, rectangular, wider than long with distinct dark brown rugosities and median suture; corners obtuse. Legs uniformly brown. wing membrane brownish, veins brown, but the anterior area of hindwings paler.
Male ( Figs. 1–5 View FIGURE 1 View FIGURE 2 View FIGURE 3 View FIGURE 4 View FIGURE 5 ). Forewing length ca. 15.0 mm, hindwing length ca. 13.0 mm. Cercus blackish brown, with short, thin hairs and long, large setae mixed. First cercal segment strongly sclerotized except for a weakly sclerotized ventrolateral white patch, length of basal half about 2X as long as wide, terminating in a long, acute, curved outward process with a spine at tip; a small swelling at basal half, easily observed in lateral view; basal segment and process armed with numerous small triangular spines or rounded sensilla, including three and two large spines in the basal half and apical half, respectively ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 , 2 View FIGURE 2 b–2d, 3, 4a–4c, 4f, 5a). Cercal segments 2–4 with a large spine-like projection on each inner face, size of projections decreasing, the second segment with the largest apical spine ( Figs. 1 View FIGURE 1 , 4 View FIGURE 4 d–4f, 5b–5c). Sternum 9 bearing a thick, wide setal brush near anterior portion.
Female. Unknown.
Type material. Holotype: male, China: Shaanxi Province, Ningqiang County, Qingmuchuan Town, Qingmuchuan National Nature Reserve , Fenlinba , light trap, 32.88 N, 105.56 E, 883 m, 2018. IV.22, Chunyan Jiang, Yizhe Li ( HIST). GoogleMaps
Etymology. The specific epithet refers to three distinct projections on the segments 2–4. Latin “tri-” indicating three, and “lobe” means projection.
Distribution. China (Shaanxi Province). Known only from the type locality. A second plecopteran species collected with C. trilobata included the type series for Kamimuria flavimacula Yan, Liu & Li, 2019 .
Remarks. Cerconychia trilobata is most similar to C. sapa in having numerous small spines or sensilla on the dorsum of the first cercal segment, and one large spine-like projection on the second cercal segment. The new species can be easily separated from C. sapa by the long, large subrectangular spot on the head, three projections along inner margin of cercal segments 2–4, and only three and two large spines in the basal half and apical half of the basal cercal segment, respectively.
