Saprobic on dead wood, soil in terrestrial habitats. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered, or clustered in small groups, erumpent, coriaceous to carbonaceous, black, subglobose, covered with sparse, brown, septate hyphae, ostiolate. Ostiole slit-like, central, suborbicular, papillate, periphysate, with a pore-like opening. Hamathecium comprising numerous, hyaline, filiform, septate, pseudoparaphyses between and above the asci, embedded in a hyaline gelatinous matrix. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, clavate or cylindrical, sometime curved, pedicellate, rounded at the apex with an ocular chamber. Ascospores bi or uni seriate or partially overlapping, filamentous or fusiform, hyaline or becoming brown at maturity, multi septate, verruculose or smooth, lacking a mucilaginous sheath. Asexual morph: undetermined.
