This species is unique in having lobules on the upper surface ( Fig. 5B View FIG ). This character separates H. sinensis from all the other species in the subgenus Everniastrum . Furthermore, its upper surface is rather rugose, and the species contains atranorin and salazinic acid as the main compounds. It was first reported from Hubei Province, Shennongjia, and new collections from Yunnan Province were found during this study. It usually grows on bark, rarely on rock, at elevations of 2200 - 3400 m, and it is currently known only from China.
