Type Locality: Costa Rica, San José Province, San Isidro.
Vernacular Names: Blackish Small-eared Shrew.
Synonyms: Cryptotis tersus Goodwin 1954 ; Cryptotis zeteki Setzer 1950 .
Distribution: Highlands above 800 m in Costa Rica and W Panama.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: C. nigrescens group. Choate (1970) included mayensis and merriami as subspecies, but see Woodman and Timm (1993) who revised the nigrescens group.
