Characterized by having leaves 3-foliolate, with stipules diminutive, hyaline and caducous. The bracts are well-developed, ≥ 3.5 × 1 cm, and can be 3-foliolate at the base of the inflorescence, becoming 1-foliolate nearer the apex. The petals vary in color from cream to white. The fruits can be ellipsoid, fusiform, or linear-cylindrical, with one short gynophore, 1 ‒ 8 mm long.

Notes: — While Watson clearly designated Palmer 94 as the type of this species, no herbarium was found holding the holotype, although numerous duplicates of this collection can be found distributed in different herbaria. US and GH hold many of Watson’s types and either could be considered an appropriate choice for the lectotype ; the GH specimen is somewhat more complete, with fully mature fruits and more large-stemmed leaves than the two US specimens. For these reasons we designate here the GH specimen as the lectotype .

Leaves 3-foliolate, rarely 5-foliolate, with the margins of the leaflets serrate-ciliate. Bracts diminutive, ca. 1 mm long, filiform, hyaline, caducous. Fruits cylindrical, torulous, glabrous, erect, with a well-developed gynophore.

Notes: — Jorgensen 3264, proposed as the type of Cleome paludosa var. brevipes in the protolog of the species, is distributed among various herbaria but without the designation of a holotype. The specimen in the BA herbarium is designated here as the lectotype as the Catalog of the Phanerogamic Flora of Argentina (Catalogue des phanérogames de l’Argentine) was based on material deposited in the Buenos Aires Natural History Museum, as well is the fact that this specimen was identified by L. Hauman (although it does not bear any designation such as “ssp. nov.” or “typus”).
