Type genus. Sillago Cuvier, 1817 View in CoL
Diagnosis. Supramaxilla absent; coronomeckelian long; palatine edentulous; six branchiostegal rays; one branchiostegal ray on epihyal; anterior parts of pelvic bones on both sides widely separated; segments on first soft pelvic fin ray shortened; first haemal spine L-shaped; 32–44 total vertebrae; one superneumerary dorsal spine; two anal spines; anal fin base elongated; one tendon of adductor mandibulae section A1 inserting on anteroventral edge of first infraorbital bone; adductor mandibulae section A2 covering section A1 laterally; transversus ventralis posterior well developed; and origin of pharyngoclavicularis externus sandwiched by sternohyoideus.
Remarks. The family can be easily separable from other percoids by a combination of characters provided in the Diagnosis. The family Sillaginidae is composed of the following five genera: Sillago , Sillaginopsis , Sillaginodes , Sillaginopodys , and Sillaginops gen. nov.
