Examined material. UNITED STATES • 2 via sur- vey, 17 via iNaturalist; Texas, Harris County, Houston ; 29.7713°N, 095.5700°W; first encounter on 24 Feb. 2018; capture via transect survey GoogleMaps .

Identification. This species possesses red, brown or black crossbands and dark stripes from the eye to the angle of the jaw. This species can be identified from Nerodia rhombifer (Hallowell, 1852) by the absence of a chain like pattern, and from Nerodia erythrogaster (Forster, 1771) by the presence of squarish spots along sides of the belly ( Powell et al. 2016).
