Crocidura orientalis Jentink in Weber 1890 View in CoL
Crocidura orientalis Jentink in Weber 1890 View in CoL , Zool. Ergebn. Reis. Niederl. Ost-Ind., Part I: 124.
Type Locality: Indonesia, W Java, Gedeh.
Vernacular Names: Oriental Shrew.
Subspecies: :
Subspecies Crocidura orientalis subsp. orientalis Jentink in Weber 1890
Subspecies Crocidura orientalis subsp. lawuana Sody 1936
Distribution: Mountains of Java.
Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: Sometimes referred to fuliginosa ( Heaney et al., 1987; Jenkins, 1982), but represents a distinct species ( Corbet and Hill, 1992; Ruedi, 1995). In Java C. orientalis is confined to the mountains and replaced by C. brunnea in the lowlands. Ruedi (1995) distinguished lawuana as a subspecies. Karyotype has 2n = 38, FN = 56 ( Ruedi and Vogel, 1995).
