Ctenanthe Eichler (1884: 83) View in CoL , tropical Americas
Ctenanthe View in CoL is a South American genus with variegated leaves, superficially very similar to Goeppertia View in CoL and used similarly as ornamentals in gardens. The two genera are easiest told apart by the fashion the leaves unfold: in Ctenanthe View in CoL each leaf curls open in the opposite direction to the previous leaf (antitropic), whereas in Goeppertia View in CoL (and Calathea View in CoL ) the direction of curling is constant (homotropic) ( Andersson 1981). There are 15 species in Ctenanthe View in CoL , of which C. lubbersiana ( Morren 1882: 21) Eichl. View in CoL in Petersen (1890: 159), C. oppenheimiana ( Morren 1875: 271) Schumann (1902: 155) View in CoL and C. setosa Eichler (1884: 84) View in CoL (fig. 7I) are cultivated in Singapore.
