Ethirothrips (?) stenomelas View in CoL from Mindanao Is., the Philippines and East Java
( Figs 149–155 View FIGURES 149–155 , 236 View FIGURES 235–246 )
Female (macroptera). Distended body length: 4.7–6.6mm. Head ( Fig. 149 View FIGURES 149–155 ) elongate, usually more than 1.8 times as long as broad. Postocular setae about half the length of head, somewhat close together, situated behind inner margin of eyes; a pair of mid-vertex setae 70–80μm. Eyes comparatively small, about 1/4 as long as head; posterior ocelli well developed, close to eyes, usually about 35–40μm in diameter, 50μm apart from each other. Antennae ( Fig. 150 View FIGURES 149–155 ) about 1.8–1.9 times as long as head; segment VIII about 2/3 as long as segment VII, very weakly constricted at base, relatively widely fused to VII; segment III slender, usually longer than 3.5 times as long as broad, a little longer than segment IV. Pronotum ( Fig. 149 View FIGURES 149–155 ) a little shorter than half the length of head; dorsal surface generally sculptured with fine reticulation. Prominent setae blunt, but pa and epim nearly pointed; aa and am subequal in length, usually more than 80μm, epim the longest. Metanotum ( Fig. 154 View FIGURES 149–155 ) without CPS. Fore femora moderately enlarged, each with a long seta at mid-externally; fore tarsus ( Fig. 152 View FIGURES 149–155 ) with wide-based tooth. Fore wings each with more than 50 duplicated cilia, usually 60–70. Pelta ( Fig. 154 View FIGURES 149–155 ) with lateral wings, the reticules fine and stout. Tube ( Fig. 155 View FIGURES 149–155 ) slender, longer than head, almost straight sided, 1.2–1.3 times as long as head, about 4.0–5.0 times as long as broad.
Measurements (female in μm). Body length about 6300 (distended). Head length 630, from anterior margin of eyes 600, width 340; eyes length 155, width 105–125; postocular setae 310–325. Antenna total length 1170, segments I–VIII length (width) as follows: 115 (70), 115 (55), 238 (62), 220 (63), 180 (50), 143 (45), 108 (35), 73 (25). Pronotum length 300, width 570. Setae on prothorax: am 90–100, aa 90–100, ml 100–120, pa 235–255, epim 260–300, cox 80–95. Fore wing length 2500. Sub-basal wing setae: S1 85, S2 125–130, S3 255–325. Setae on tergite IX: S1 670, S2 670. Tube length 780, maximum width 170; terminal setae 500.
Male (macroptera). Distended body length: 5.0–6.0mm. Colour and structure very similar to female. Prothorax and fore legs somewhat stouter in large male. Tube 1.1–1.2 times as long as head, 4.4 times as long as broad.
Measurements (male in μm). Body length about 5350 (distended). Head length 580, from anterior margin of eyes 550, width 310; eyes length 150, width 100–110; postocular setae 260–290. Antenna total length 1100, segments I–VIII length (width) as follows: 113 (65), 105 (52), 210 (58), 212 (60), 175 (50), 132 (43), 100 (33), 70 (20). Pronotum length 280, width 510. Setae on prothorax: am 80, aa 85, ml 115–120, pa 220–240, epim 200–240, cox 100. Fore wing length 2350. Sub-basal wing setae: S1 80, S2 120–125, S3 270–275. Setae on tergite IX: S1 640, S2 630. Tube length 660, maximum width 150; terminal setae 450.
Specimens-examined. Philippine, Mindanao Is., Mt. Apo, Agko, alt. about 1300m, on dead leaves, 2 females and 1 male, 3.viii.1979, 7 females and 3 males, 30.vii.1979, SO; North Cotabato , Ilomavis, 9 females and 9 males, on dead leaves, 28.ii.1978, N. Kashiwai, 3 females and 10 males, 26.vii.1979, SO. Indonesia, E. Java, Mt. Ijen , 900m, 2 females and 2 males, 21.iv.1981, W. Suzuki .
Remarks. Unfortunately, most specimens of E. (?) stenomelas from Mindanao are not always mounted in good condition. In particular, the wings and prominent setae have been significantly damaged by maceration that was too long time because of their hard and dark bodies. However, a few females and a male are mounted in good condition.
