Sambucus sarmatiaca Doweld , sp. nov.
≡ Sambucus palaeoracemosa Baikovskaja in Kryshtofovich & Baikovskaja (1965: 121, pl. 37, fig. 2; pl. 38, figs. 7, 9, 10, 10a, text-fig. 42), nom. inval. (ICN, Art. 40.1).
Description:—Leaves widely elliptical, irregularly serrate, teeth crescent, turned up. Secondary veinlets alternate, partially joined to form loops near the leaf margin, along with veinlets running to the teeth.
Type:—[fossil leaves] Krynka river, right tributary of Mius river, Matveev-Kurgan district, Rostov region, Russian Federation (holotype, 1063/982, Komarov Botanical Institute, RussianAcademy of Sciences,St.- Petersburg, Russian Federation)—figured by Kryshtofovich & Baikovskaja 1965: pl. 38, figs. 10, 10a.
Occurrence:—Middle Miocene (Serravalian = Upper Badenian); Europe.
Eponymy:—From Sarmatia , an ancient palaeogeographical unit (now Eastern Europe).

Note:—The fossil-species Sambucus palaeoracemosa Baikovskaja (in Kryshtofovich & Baikovskaja 1965: 121) was not validly published due to the lack of type designation (ICN, Art. 40.1), being based on several leaf imprints (Coll. 982: 1059–1063).
