Ocotea pontica (Kolakovsky & Schakryl) Doweld , comb. nov.
≡ Laurophyllum ponticum Kolakovsky & Schakryl (in Takhtajan 1975: 47, pl. 23, fig. 12; pl. 24, fig. 11, text-fig. 20: 5)—“ Laurophyllum ponticum ” Kolakovsky & Schakryl (in Kolakovsky1962: 44), nom. inval. (Art. 40.1) ≡ Laurophyllites ponticus (Kolakovsky & Schakryl) Schakryl (in Kolakovsky et al. 1982: 204) ≡ Laurophyllites ponticus (Kolakovsky & Schakryl) Schakryl (1984: 146) , nom. superfl.
Type:—[fossil leaves] Pitsunda, Abkhazia (holotype, П-132, Sukhum Botanical Garden, Sukhum, Abkhazia, n.v.).
Occurrence:—Pliocene (Upper Pontian); Caucasus.
IFPNI: 7016879F-ACEC-CD94-8DA8-0A4DF328C9CA.
Note:—The fossil-species “ Laurophyllum ponticum” Kolakovsky & Schakryl (in Kolakovsky1962: 44) was not validly published, since the authors did not designate the type ( ICN, Art. 40.1), based the description on several leaf imprints (Coll. П-132, 153). The fossil-species was validated later by Kolakovsky & Schakryl (in Takhtajan 1975: 47). The structure of the leaf epidermis of the fossil-species is similar with that of several extant Ocotea species ( Schakryl
1965), viz. О. aniboides Mez , О. cernua Меz, О. cordata Меz, О. fasciculata Mez and O. tristis (Nees & Martius) Mez (= О. areolata Mez ) [most similar].
