Photinia sarmatiaca Doweld , sp. nov.

Photinia acuminata Baikovskaja (in Kryshtofovich & Baikovskaja 1965: 82, pl. 20, fig. 8, pl. 21, figs. 2, 3, 7, text-fig. 30), nom. inval. (ICN, Art. 40.1).

Description:—Leaves elliptical to widely elliptical, base wedge-shaped, apex acute, sometimes attenuate. Leaf margin serrate, teeth thinly pointed, directed up, smaller and somewhat pressed alternate with larger ones and sharply separated from the leaf plate. Secondary veins thin, slightly curved or almost straight, form an open angle with the midvein; they branch near the edge; one of the branches connects with each other, forming fairly regular festoons along the edge; other veinlets, branched, reweave in a smaller network, the smallest veinlets end in the teeth.

Type:—[fossil leaves] Krynka river, right tributary of Mius river, Matveev-Kurgan district, Rostov region, Russian Federation (holotype, 835/982, Komarov Botanical Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St.- Petersburg, Russian Federation)—figured by Kryshtofovich & Baikovskaja, p. 82, pl. 21, figs. 2, 2a, text-fig. 30.

Occurrence:—Middle Miocene (Serravalian = Upper Badenian); Europe.

Eponymy:—From Sarmatia , an ancient palaeogeographical unit (now Eastern Europe).

IFPNI: AE437C16-503E-01CC-77D4-EC70E43BE5E8.

Note:—Baikovskaja (in Kryshtofovich & Baikovskaja 1965: 82) failed to designate the necessitated type for the new fossil-species, which was based on several leaf imprints (833–836/982, 1319–1320/982). The fossil-species was recorded also in Romania ( Givulescu & Olos 1973: 41; Givulescu 1990: 108), but was never validated. It is validated here in accord with the requirements of ICN ( Turland et al. 2018).
