Anthicimimus castrii (Franz) View in CoL , comb. n.

( Figs 9–10 View FIGURES 9 – 11 , 12–20 View FIGURES 12 – 13 View FIGURES 14 – 16 View FIGURES 17 – 20 )

Pseudoeudesis castrii Franz, 1967: 614 , fig. 2.

Type material studied. Lectotype (here designated) ( CHILE) ♂: five labels ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 9 – 11 ): " CHILE SANTIAGO / CERRO EL ROBLE / BERLESE / BOSQUE DECIDUO" [white, handwritten], " Pseudoeudesis / castrii m. / ♂ Typus " [red, handwritten], " CHILE / M. N. / H. N. [on the left half] Tipo / No / 4269 [on the right half]" [white, printed and handwritten], " C. El Rable / 5-X-1961 " [white, handwritten], "R-1B" [white, handwritten] ( MNHNC) .

Revised diagnosis. BL <1.2 mm; pronotal base with one pair of small lateral pits, lacking transverse groove; sides of pronotum in posterior 1/5 nearly parallel.

Redescription. Body of male ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 11 ) elongate and slender, flattened, BL 1.16 mm; pigmentation light brown; vestiture of setae slightly lighter than cuticle.

Head ( Figs 9 View FIGURES 9 – 11 , 12–13 View FIGURES 12 – 13 ) in dorsal view subhexagonal, broadest at eyes, HL 0.21 mm, HW 0.21 mm; tempora nearly twice as long as eyes; vertex and frons confluent and evenly convex; supraantennal tubercles distinct but feebly raised; eyes moderately large, weakly projecting laterally. Vertex and frons with inconspicuous fine and sparse punctures, covered with sparse, suberect and moderately long setae, vertex additionally with long and thick bristles. Antennae ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 11 ) long and slender, AnL 0.60 mm; antennomeres I and II strongly elongate, III–V each indistinctly longer than broad, VI–VII as long as broad, VIII distinctly transverse, IX–X slightly broader than long, XI about as long as IX and X combined, about twice as long as broad, with blunt and slightly asymmetrical apex.

Pronotum ( Figs 9 View FIGURES 9 – 11 , 12 View FIGURES 12 – 13 ) in dorsal view approximately oval, broadest between middle and anterior third, PL 0.28 mm, PW 0.24 mm; anterior margin weakly arcuate; anterior pronotal corners blunt and obtuse-angled but distinct; sides rounded in anterior half and indistinctly sinuate in posterior half; posterior corners distinct, obtuse-angled; posterior margin strongly arcuate; base with one pair of small and shallow lateral pits. Pronotal disc with fine and inconspicuous punctures; setae on dorsal part moderately long, sparse and suberect, sides with thick and long bristles.

Elytra ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 11 ) oval, broadest slightly anterior to middle, weakly narrowing anteriorly and posteriorly; EL 0.68 mm, EW 0.40 mm, EI 1.69; basal impressions absent, subhumeral lines ( Fig. 12 View FIGURES 12 – 13 ; hc) narrow and carinate, sharply marked. Punctures and setae similar to those on pronotal disc. Hind wings not studied.

Legs ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 11 ) long and slender, unmodified.

Aedeagus ( Figs 17–20 View FIGURES 17 – 20 ) thin-walled, elongate, in ventral view subtriangular, strongly narrowing distally, with subtriangular apical portion of median lobe; AeL 0.20 mm; endophallus lightly sclerotized, asymmetrical; parameres long and slender, broadened in subapical region, each with several short subapical and apical setae.

Female. Unknown (see Lectotype designation below).

Distribution. Central Chile.

Remarks. Anthicimimus castrii ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 9 – 11 ) can be distinguished from A. anthiciformis ( Fig. 11 View FIGURES 9 – 11 ) on the basis of the following characters: the body distinctly smaller (1.16 mm vs. 1.63 mm); antennomeres IV̄VI indistinctly longer than broad (IV̄V) or as long as broad (VĪVII) (in A. anthiciformis strongly elongate); antennomere VIII transverse (in A. anthiciformis slightly elongate); the pronotum near base nearly parallel-sided (in A. anthiciformis lateral margins near base are distinctly divergent posteriorly); pronotal base with lateral pits, lacking transverse groove (with groove and lacking pits in A. anthiciformis ); the elytra weakly narrowed anteriorly and posteriorly (strongly narrowed in A. anthiciformis ); and the anterior metaventral process separated from posterior tip of the mesoventral process by distance much longer than its length (in A. anthiciformis processes are separated by space much shorter than length of the anterior metaventral process).

Lectotype designation. Franz (1967) studied a male and female of this species, the former from Cerro el Roble, the latter from Bosque de Fray Jorge. Only the male was available for study; the depository of female remains unknown. The male is labeled " Typus ", but Franz (1967) in his publication did not select any specimen to serve as the name-bearing type (as in the case of Pseudoeudesis brasiliensis , he did not use the term " holotype " or any equivalent), and the two type specimens should be treated as syntypes. The male ( Figs 9–10 View FIGURES 9 – 11 ) is here designated lectotype.
