Hyposoter meridionellator Aubert, 1965 : di Giovanni & Riedel (2017)

We have examined the lectotype designated above. It was described as a subspecies of Hyposoter rufovariatus Schmiedeknecht View in CoL , but has little in common with that species other than general colouration. Horstmann’s notes and draft key make clear his intention to raise this taxon to species level, which was done by di Giovanni & Riedel in the reference above.

The species stands out because of the unusual structure of the petiole of the first tergite, with no glymma, and a rather narrow lateral profile, with sharp edges both dorsally and ventrally. It also has an unusually short propodeum, so that the area superomedia is almost in the same plane as the area petiolaris.

The biology is unknown. We have seen specimens from mainland France (Eastern Pyrenees), Corsica and Italy.
