Neophoneus Williston View in CoL

Phoneus Macquart, 1838:79 (1839:195) (preocc. Kaup 1829). Type species servillei Macquart. Neophoneus Williston, 1889: 255 View in CoL . New comb. Hull, 1962: 353; Martin & Papavero, 1970: 44.

Neophoneus View in CoL is removed from the list of West Indies asilids because of an error in identification in existing literature ( Martin & Papavero, 1970). Bigot (1878) described flavotibius View in CoL from Haiti, probably placing it in Phoneus because Macquart's figure of the type species, servillei, appears somewhat like a female Efferia View in CoL . Bigot apparently did not realize that Macquart’s genus was a Laphriinae View in CoL . Diagnosis of P. flavotibius View in CoL as a species of Efferia View in CoL is based on photographs of the type specimen (provided by J.M. Ayala), and the original description of the species and figures provided by Bigot (E. Fisher, pers. comm., 2006). The status of the species will be determined following examination of the type P. flavotibius View in CoL and a review of the species of Efferia View in CoL from Hispaniola.
