Diagnosis (male). Anepisternum bare, left epandrial process with only one discernible process: a subepandrial wall extending from the hypoproct to its apex ( Fig. 24P View FIGURE 24 ), wing without macula ( Fig. 14C View FIGURE 14 ).

Description. Male. Body length, 2.3 mm. Head. Frons dark brown, sparsely setulose, with well-defined median furrow. Flagellomere 1 brown, conical-elongate.Arista apical, with length subequal to flagellomere 1 in length. Palpus light brown. Gena with two setae. Thorax. Scutum, scutellum, and pleural regions brown; anepisternum bare. Legs yellowish-brown, foretarsomere 5 brown. Foretibia with two dorsal setae and anterodorsal row of strong setulae. Foremetatarsus with anterior excavation, anteroapical setulose process, group of setae at base of excavation, and seta at base of anteroapical process ( Fig. 8O View FIGURE 8 ). Foremetatarsus ratio 0.35. Posterior face of hind femur with narrow basoventral band of tiny blunt setulae ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 D–E). Hind femur height/length ratio 0.34. Hind tibia with one dorsal seta in basal half. Wing ( Fig. 14C View FIGURE 14 ). Costa swollen, 0.4 of the wing length; R 2 + 3 vestigial; M 1 concave, curved posteriorly at apex; M 2 slightly sinuous, CuA 1 -M 2 /M 2 -M 1 ratio 1.2; CuA 1 sinuous. Halter base brown, apex yellowish-brown to white. Abdomen. Tergites brown, with shining pubescence. Hypopygium light brown ( Fig. 24P View FIGURE 24 ). Left epandrial process with only one discernible process: a subepandrial wall extending from the hypoproct to its apex. Subepandrial wall with setulae at its edge. Margin of right lobe of hypandrium without lateral projection. Hypoproct with two setae.

Distribution. From Costa Rica to Bolivia, occurring in some mid-elevation sites in the Andean region, and in Brazilian Amazonia ( Fig. 27H View FIGURE 27 ).

Etymology. Name derived from the Latin root diffusus (spread out, dispersed), referring to the wide geographical distribution of this species.

Variations. Specimens with a conical flagellomere 1; foretibia with two to three dorsal setae; wing vein R 2+3 present or absent.
