Statice remotispicula

Lacaita (1884) provided a Latin diagnosis, a description, the origin (“costiera di Amalfi sulle rupi calcaree vicinissime al mare”) and cited two specimens which are part of the Gussone’s Herbarium (“…6 luglio 1851 «Scogli dirimpetto Vietri prope Salerno», l’altro il 30 maggio 1851 «Scogli sotto Vietri»”). According to Art. 9.5 of ICN, these Gussonean specimens are syntypes, even if they were paradoxically cited by Lacaita just because considered as atypical individuals (art 7.2 of ICN).

At NAP we found five sheets which were originally labelled by G. Gussone. These sheets certainly refer to the two specimens cited by Lacaita (1884). In fact, the original fascicle was reorganized: the two specimens (each one originally constituted by several individuals) appear rearranged in five sheets, some of which represented by modern papers. Two sheets bear labels handwritten by L. Grande in 1910, and report the original information occurring in the original Gussone’s labels. We indicate the specimens as follows:

1 Gussone called the plants “ Statice minuta ” at least up to year 1850, as indicated by other specimens preserved in Gussone’s collections: one of them bears the Gussone’s handwritten note “ Statice minuta | 26 Maggio 1850 | Ischia ai Maronti”.

- Specimen G1a: “ 30 maggio 1851 | Scoglio sotto Vietri” [Gussone’s script; Vietri (nowadays known as “Vietri sul mare”) is a small town of the Amalfi Coast, near Salerno where the species still occurs on the two maritime rocks called “I due fratelli” (= “two brothers”)], “ Statice remotispicula Lacaita !! | Scogli sotto Vietri | 30 maggio 1851 | Gussone ” (L. Grande’s script), and “ Limonium remotispiculum | n° 1566” (Pignatti’s label).

- specimen G1b: “ Statice | In lapidosis maritimis Italiae australis ” (Gussone’s script), “ Statice remotispicula Lacaita !! | Scogli sotto Vietri | 30 maggio 1851 | Gussone | Grande 1910” (L. Grande’s script).

- specimen G2a: “6 Luglio 1851 | Scogli dirimpetto Vietri prope Salerno” (Gussone’s script), and another label (dated 1910) by L. Grande, who identified the specimen as S. remotispicula ). This specimen is represented by one flowering plant (fig. 3);

- specimen G2b: “ Statice remotispicula Lacaita !! | Scogli dirimpetto Vietri presso Salerno | 6 luglio 1851 | Gussone | Grande 1910” (Grande’s script), and “n. 1560” (Pignatti’s script, which confirms the previous identification). This specimen bears two fragments, but we are not sure whether they are parts of the same plant.

- specimen G2c: “ Statice remotispicula Lacaita !! | Scogli dirimpetto Vietri presso Salerno | 6 luglio 1851 | Gussone | Grande 1910” (Grande’s script). A very age-old individual is preserved on the sheet.

All these five specimens completely match the protologue by Lacaita (1884: 169) both in terms of morphology and collection date. We here designate the specimen G2a as the lectotype of the name Statice remotispicula because it is better preserved, while specimen G2b and G2c are isolectoypes. The other specimens (G1a, and G1b) are syntypes.
