Anthocoptes transitionalis Hodgkiss 1913

Type host and locality. Acer rubrum L. ( Sapindaceae ), USA, New York, Geneva.

Distribution. England (recorded here), Hungary (Ripka & de Lillo 1997), Serbia ( Petanović & Stanković 1999) and USA (op. cit.)

Relation to the host. Originally found in deformed or "pustular" areas in the smooth bark of A. rubrum (red maple) ( Hodgkiss 1913), and also recorded on the underside of leaves, causing russeting and drying of leaves ( Batchelor 1952). In the British population studied here the mites were found vagrant on the underside of the leaves causing no apparent damage.

Collection details. Wales, Pembrokeshire, Carew (51° 41ʹ 52.8ʺ N, 4° 49ʹ 53.04ʺ W), low numbers on Acer pseudoplatanus L., collected by J. C. Ostojá-Starzewski, 08.vii.2009.
