VERTEBRAE: 67–78, 50–56, 124–144 (MVF 73, 53, 131).
DISTRIBUTION: Cosmopolitan.
REMARKS: The wide range of vertebral counts and the broad distribution suggest that more than one species may be involved.

REMARKS: Jordan and Gilbert (1883a: 355) designated Muraena helena as the type species of Muraena , overlooking Bleeker’s (1864b: 113) earlier designation of M. anguilla . The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, in Opinion 1672, suppressed Bleeker’s priority and placed helena on the Official List as the type species of Muraena .
