Vatica chinensis Linnaeus , Mantissa Plantarum Altera: 242. 1771.
"Habitat in China." RCN: 3439.
Lectotype (Ashton in Jarvis & al., Regnum Veg. 127: 98. 1993): Herb. Linn. No. 614.1 ( LINN) .
Generitype of Vatica Linnaeus.
Current name: Vatica chinensis L. ( Dipterocarpaceae ).
Note: Meijer (in Ceylon J. Sci., Biol. Sci. 10: 77. 1972) stated " Vatica ...is based on Vatica chinensis Linn. , according to Ashton (msc) with as holotype a Hermann collection s.n. in the Linnaean herbarium (London)". There are two sheets in LINN associated with this name, neither apparently from Hermann. Ashton (in Dassanayake, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 1(2): 196. 1977; in Dassanayake & Fosberg, Revised Handb. Fl. Ceylon 1: 422. 1980) subsequently published what Meijer had reported, followed by Towary & Sarkar (in J. Econ. Taxon. Bot. 8: 420. 1986), who placed the material in L, rather than LINN. None of these statements distinguishes between 614.1 and 614.2 (LINN) so Ashton’s 1993 explicit choice of 614.1 (LINN) as lectotype is accepted here.
