COMMENTS: Reig (1986:409) questioned placement of this subfamily in Echimyidae , and raised the possibility that dactylomyines are capromyids. If West Indian Spiny Rats are placed in Capromyidae (see Woods, 1982) then dactylomyines might be too, but here the West Indian forms are left in Echimyidae in their own subfamily (see comment under Heteropsomyinae ).
