Figs. 29–35 View FIGURES 29 – 35

Diagnosis. This species can be distinguished from other Colletes , because the males have reddish brown integument and mainly dark brown pubescence ( Figs. 29, 31 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). It can be separated from C. bombiformis and C. nigerrima by having paraocular area smaller and denser toward malar area ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). Colletes jaliscoensis also differs from C. bombiformis by having malar area four times wider than long and reddish brown pronotal lobe with small, sparse, and shallow punctures. Males of C. jaliscoensis are easily distinguished by having ferruginous pubescence and reddish brown integument; scape, pedicel, and F1 reddish brown.

Description. Holotype ♀: Integument dark brown, darker on mesosoma. Pubescence brown dark and short, denser in scutum and scutellum; middle femur with tuft of thick hairs. Terga of metasoma without apical bands. Body length 14.23 mm (12.64 – 14.45 mm, n=7), forewing length 10.77 mm (9.89 – 11.22 mm, n=7). Head: Mandible reddish brown; apex rounded with light brown band. Subapical teeth alongside anterior margin of mandible. Malar area four times wider than long, with thin and irregular striae. Labrum smooth and black; three times wider than long; with an elevation on discal area divided by longitudinal sulcus. Clypeus strongly projected, flat on discal area and with longitudinal shallow sulcus ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ); integument shiny and dark brown with thin striae oriented diagonally; punctures between striae, mainly on discal area; posterior margin with a small middle notch; anterior margin straight. Supraclypeal area shiny, with flat elevation; deep punctures, smaller and denser on sides ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). Paraocular area with punctures of two different sizes, larger and denser on frons and interocellar area, smaller toward malar area ( Fig. 31 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). Facial fovea thin and smooth. Scape, pedicel, F1, and F2 dark brown; other flagellomeres light brown. Scape six times longer than wide. F2 smaller than F1. Pubescence of facial area light, denser and longer on antennal socket. Vertex flat and below upper margin of eyes; small and sparse punctures, denser on ocellocular; hairs sparser, darker, and longer than in facial area. Genal area with a depression on first half; sparse and shallow punctures; thin striae on malar area. Mesosoma: Pronotum reddish brown; with sparse and shallow punctures on margins. Prothoracic spine wide, short, and blunt. Pronotal lobe with sparse and shallow punctures. Scutum shiny and dark brown; deep and dense punctures, faded on central part of anterior margin and discal area; pubescence dark and plumose. Scutellum dark with elevation on anterior margin; deep and dense punctures, more abundant toward posterior margin, almost absent on anterior margin and discal area. Metanotum opaque and coarse with deep and contiguous punctures. Scutellum and metanotum with longer hairs than in scutum. Sides of mesosoma with lateral, long, and plumose hairs; deep punctures, less dense toward episternum. Upper surface of mesepisternum with reddish brown integument. Basal area of propodeum with longitudinal striae forming uniform pits and irregular reticulate. Posterior surface of propodeum opaque and coarse, with irregular, thick, and dense striae. Wings: Tegula reddish brown; with dense punctures except on discal area; dark hairs, lighter on margin. Wings hyaline and smoky; veins dark brown ( Fig. 29 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). First, second, and third submarginal cells lengths 1.5 mm, 0.8 mm, and 0.77 mm (1.35 – 1.62 mm; 0.76 – 0.79 mm; 0.67 – 0.78 mm, n=7), respectively. Marginal cell length 2.5 mm (2.24–2.63 mm). Legs: Reddish brown. Malus pectinate. Middle tibial spur reddish brown; posterior dark brown. Legs with dark pubescence; lighter and thick hairs on posterior margin of middle femur. Posterior tibia 5.5 times longer than wide. Basitarsus almost three times longer than wide. Claws bifurcate and dark reddish brown, lighter on apex. Metasoma: T1–T6 without apical bands ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ); T1–T5 with few long hairs; T6 with short pubescence. T1 with reddish brown integument, other terga with reddish brown integument only on marginal zone. Pregradular area of T1 with shallow depression; small and dense punctures on marginal zone. T2 with denser punctures ( Fig. 32 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). T5 and T6 with dark brown hairs. S1–S6 dark, reddish brown on sides of pregradular area. S1–S4 with small and shallow punctures, denser on marginal zone. S5 and S6 with denser punctures than on other sterna.

Allotype ♂: Similar to female with integument and pubescence ferruginous, darker on terga. Body length 12.3 mm (12.24 – 12.56 mm, n=7); forewing length 10 mm (9.93 – 10.28 mm, n=7). Head: Mandible simple with reddish brown integument. Malar area three times wider than longer; with reddish brown integument; weak and dense striae. Labrum shiny and reddish brown; four times wider than long; integument without punctures; elevation on discal area. Clypeus reddish brown; almost as wide as long; proximal margin dark brown with punctures between striae shiny and broad; distal margin straight; posterior margin convex. Facial area with light pubescence. Ocelli above eyes. Facial fovea reddish, more intense than rest of face. Eyes strongly emarginate on inner margin. Scape, pedicel, and F1 reddish brown. F1 smaller than other flagellomeres. Mesosoma: ferruginous pubescence. Punctures small and dense. Scutellum similar to female, projected medially. Metanotum shiny; with coarse appearance and contiguous punctures. Sides of mesosoma with deeper punctures than in scutum. Propodeum similar to female; with two well separated central pits basally. Wings: Tegula reddish brown with lighter margins and shallow, contiguous punctures; rounded posteriorly, anteriorly angulated. Wings hyaline and amberish ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 29 – 35 ). Veins dark brown. First, second, and third submarginal cells length 1.34 mm, 0.77 mm, and 0.58 mm, respectively (1.29 – 1.37 mm; 0.76 – 0.79 mm; 0.54 – 0.61 mm, n=7). Marginal cell length 2.12 mm (2.08 – 2.15 mm, n=7). Legs: Reddish brown, pubescence brown. Trochanter and posterior femur with pubescence longer than on tibia. Tibial spurs reddish brown, simple, and dented. Posterior tibia almost six times longer than wide. Claws bifurcate; reddish brown, but darker on apex. Metasoma: Similar to female but with punctures deeper and denser on all terga. Marginal zones of terga with light brown integument. S7, S8, and genital capsule as in Figures 33–35 View FIGURES 29 – 35 .

Etymology. The specific epithet refers to Jalisco, the only state where all specimens of this species have been collected.

Distribution. The species C. jaliscoensis sp. n., is known from pine and oak forests in the Sierra del Tigre of Jalisco. It may be present in areas with similar vegetation such as the Sierra de Manantlán, Volcán Nevado de Colima, and western part of Transmexican Volcanic Belt ( Fig. 57 View FIGURES 57 – 58. 57 ).

Remarks. Some females present mandibles with blunt and eroded apex. The coloration of scape, pedicel, F1 and F 2 may be dark in some females; similarly, the females may present reddish integument on mesosoma and metasoma. Some specimens may have almost black middle tibial spurs. T1 with color variation of integument; discal and basal areas reddish brown, elsewhere dark brown.
