status

comb. nov.

Striatoandricus furnessae ( Weld, 1913) , comb. nov.

Callirhytis furnessae Weld, 1913: 133 , gall, female.

Andricus furnessae (Weld) : Weld 1922: 16.

Type examined. Weld (1913) mentioned that the type is deposited at the USNM; however, GM, during multiple visits to the museum, never found them.

Diagnosis. According to the original description ( Weld 1913), resembles S. furnessulus (see Diagnosis to S. furnessulus ) and S. tenuicornis , both known from USA, Arizona. Striatoandricus furnessae and S. tenuicornis differ from S. furnessulus in having the body uniformly dark brown, the head and mesosoma are uniformly rugoso-reticulate, notauli are complete. However, in S. furnessae the scape and pedicel are honey-yellow, the mesopleuron is uniformly and entirely sculptured, the second metasomal tergum with a reticulate posterior band, anteriorly smooth, shining while in S. tenuicornis the scape and pedicel are dark brown, the mesopleuron is reticulate, except a small part of the speculum which is smooth, shining and the second metasomal tergum is dorsolaterally striate.

Gall. Large woolly mass nearly or completely encircling twigs, 85 mm long by 60 mm in diameter. Each mass is made up of separate larval cells, from a few to over 150. Each cell contains a single larval chamber, and is covered with dense long white wool. Cells are rhomboid, hairy to the base, with thick and woody walls.

Biology. Only an asexual generation is known, inducing galls on Q uercus sp.

Distribution. Mexico: Michoacan.
