scientific name

Viola canina L.
status

Viola canina Linnaeus , Species Plantarum 2: 935. 1753.

"Habitat in Europae apricis." RCN: 6773.

Lectotype (Nikitin in Bot. Zhurn. 80(7): 93. 1995): Herb. Linn. No. 277 ( LAPP) .

Current name: Viola canina L. ( Violaceae ).

Note: Jonsell & Jarvis (in Nordic J. Bot. 22: 81. 2002), unaware of Nikitin’s earlier choice, designated Clifford material as lectotype. It seems possible that the Lapland type material is identifiable with ssp. montana (L.) Hartm. rather than the typical subspecies. If confirmed, this will prove nomenclaturally disruptive.
