Cosmonotus grayii Adams, 1847 View in CoL (before 31 December), not White, 1848 (29 March) ( Decapoda : Brachyura : Raninidae )
Adams (1847c: 497) describes: “The Cosmonotus (Adams and White) , another new genus, was obtained near Unsang, on the east coast among the clear sandy pools within the reef-barrier. It has the same habits as Hippa and Remipes . The species ( C. grayii , A[dams]. and W[hite].) is of a brick-dust red colour and scarlet, minutely speckled, with white legs and chelae”. This discussion of Cosmonotus grayii constitutes a description of a new genus- and species- name, making both available.
The brief description of this species in Adams (1847c: 497) agrees with that of this species by White (1848b: 227, 228), which is conventionally cited as the first description of the genus- and species-group names Cosmonotus grayii (e.g., Clark & Presswell 2001: 156; Ng et al. 2008: 42). As White (1848b) was published later on 29 March 1848 (see Duncan 1937: 80), these genus- and species-group names should be cited as Cosmonotus grayii Adams, 1847 . The name conforms to the definition of this species by Tavares (2006).
