scientific name

Melitaea phoebe subsp. streltzovi
status

M. phoebe streltzovi Kolesnichenko & Yakovlev, 2004 [

TL: W. Mongolia, Hovd aimak, 30 km NNW from Bulgan somon, junction of Bajan-Gol River & Bulgan-Gol River, 1500 m 11- 13.07.2003], distributed in the southern part of the Altai Mountains. Types figured by the authorities: Plates V & VI (upperside & underside respectively), figs 10 & 11 (male holotype & female paratype, respectively) indicate that the usual black markings are very heavy on the upper surfaces and on the forewing undersides; the anti-marginal markings are arcuate, touching the intervening vein and the antennae appear to be club shaped; the latter characters indicating its association with M. phoebe rather than M. ornata . This agrees with the conclusions of van Oorschot & Coutsis (2014: 61) and Russell & Tennent (2016: 33, 54, note 85), who mistakenly indicated at first that the specimens were taken in August, 2003 (p. 33) rather than correctly in July (p. 54). The holotype and paratype, which were illustrated, are housed in the Darwin Museum, Moscow, Russian Federation.
