Neumania (Lemienia) diversa n. sp.

( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 )

Material examined. Holotype male, Chiang Saen Lake , Chiang Rai Province, 20° 15.701ʹ N, 100° 02.830ʹ E, alt. 360 m a.s.l., 19-xi-2001, leg H. Smit ( RMNH) . Paratypes: 44 males, one female, same data as holotype ( RMNH) .

Diagnosis. Acetabula partially on a platelet or completely free in the integument; pre-genital sclerite U-shaped in male, IV-leg slightly modified in male.

Description. Male: Idiosoma 884 (764–905) long, 683 (603–683) wide. Integument smooth, idiosoma without plates, except small glandularia platelets. Apodemes of anterior coxae long, extending to fourth coxae. Posterior margin of fourth coxae with short apodemes not extending beyond genital plates. Genital field with numerous acetabula, only partially lying on a plate. Pre-genital sclerite U-shaped, 44 wide; post-genital sclerite small, knoblike. Length P1-5: 44, 140, 78, 136, 36. P2 with a concave ventral margin, P4 with small setal tubercles and a long anteromedial seta., P5 with large distal setae. Length of I-leg-4–6: 348, 365, 267. Length of IV-leg-4–6: 328, 381, 296. Fourth leg slightly modified, especially IV-leg-5. First and second leg with heavy grooved setae, third and fourth legs with numerous swimming setae; leg claws large, without clawlets.

Female: Idiosoma 905 long and 608 wide. In many characters similar to male, but pre-genital sclerite not Ushaped but small, knob-like. Gonopore 146 long. Acetabula not on plates, but lying free in the integument. Length of P1-5: 50, 146, 82, 138, 48. Length of I-leg-4–6: 348, 373, 235. Length of IV-leg-4–6: 324, 397, 332. Legs as in male, except IV-leg, which is not modified.

Etymology. Named for the fact that the new species differs from most, if not all, Neumania species in the nearabsence of genital plates.

Remarks. The near-absence of genital plates is very unusual in Neumania s.s. as well as in the subgenus Lemienia . Moreover, in males of the aforementioned subgenera, the genital plates are fused into one complete genital field. In the new species, the genital field is more similar to a female genital field. At the type locality, many specimens were collected, all lack the usual genital plates. This applies to young males as well as older males. In the genus Encentridophorus , genital plates are lacking, but this genus has very short apodemes of the anterior coxae.
