Taxonomy. Original description: Scaphiodon trutta Heckel, 1843: 1056 View in CoL [66] [Aleppo, Syria; Tigris River, Mosul, Iraq; syntypes: NMW 55926 (1), 55928 (2), 55935-37 (2, 2, 1), 55939-42 (4, 1, 3, 1);?RMNH 3164 (ex NMW) (1) Aleppo; SMF 923 (ex NMW in 1843) (1), 2567 (ex NMW in 1844) (1); ZMB 8789 (1, dry)].— Iraq synonyms: Capoeta trutta ( Heckel, 1843) View in CoL .—Revisions: Turan et al. (2022: 205).—Illustration: Heckel, 1843: pl. 4 (fig. 3) as Scaphiodon trutta View in CoL .

Status in Iraq. Recorded from Iraq in original description by Heckel (1843); subsequently reported by Agha et al. (2023).—Iraq materials: NMW, RMNH.

Distribution and habitat. Distribution in Iraq: Tigris and Euphrates River basins.—General distribution: Middle East: Tigris and Euphrates River basins ( Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran).—Habitat: This species inhabits a very wide range of habitats, at least seasonally connected to running waters in which it spawns. Most abundant in lowland rivers, but also very common in reservoirs and marshes, and commonly found in streams in slow current sections. Freshwater.

Economic importance. Locally commercially important.

Conservation. Conservation Status in Iraq: Unknown.—IUCN: LC (IUCN 2023).—Threats: While there are many threats in the area, none is so serious to threaten this species.—Low sensitivity to human activities.—Not considered as a keystone species.—Decline status: Stable.—Low priority for conservation action.
