Neomuscina goianensis Lopes & Khouri, 1995 View in CoL

( Figs. 29–34 View FIGURES 29 – 34 )

Neomuscina goianensis Lopes & Khouri 1996: 45 View in CoL (description), 47 figs. 1–5 (respectively: fifth sternite; cercal plate, frontal view; cercal plate, lateral view; aedeagus, frontal view; aedeagus, lateral view); de Carvalho et al. 2005: 93 (catalogue); Rodríguez-Fernández et al. 2006: 98 (listed).

Diagnosis: dorsocentral 2:4; acrostichal 0:1 or 1:1; mid femur with three preapical setae; posterior thoracic spiracle with dark setulae at least on posteroventral corner, in addition to the flap-like hair cover; female: sternite VI with a triangle-shaped sclerotization; tergites VII almost touching each other; wing hyaline, with dark clouds on R1, R2+3, r-m and dm-cu.

Color: general body coloration yellowish brown; apex darkened brown yellow; facialia, parafacialia and gena yellowish brown; antenna and palpus yellow; scutum with four dark stripes of grey pruinosity; legs yellowish brown; calypters white; halter yellow; wing hyaline, with dark clouds on R1, R2+3, r-m and dm-cu.

Male. Length. Body: 5.8–6.0 mm; wing: 6.2–6.5 mm.

Head: eyes separated from each other by 0.1–0.13 mm at level of ocellar tubercle; 11–12 pairs of convergent frontal setae, except for the last two parallel pairs; ocellar seta large and parallel; postocellar seta large and divergent; inner vertical seta small and convergent; outer vertical seta small and divergent.

Thorax: acrostichal 0:1 or 1:1; dorsocentral 2:4; intra-alar 1; posterior thoracic spiracle with dark setulae on at least the posteroventral corner in addition to the flap-like hair cover; fore tibia with a distinct anterodorsal median seta and small, almost inconspicuous, submedian seta on the same surface; apex of fore tibia with setae on anterodorsal, dorsal, posterodorsal, posteroventral and ventral surfaces; mid femur with a row of setae on ventral surface from base to middle; mid femur with three preapical setae, on dorsal, posterodorsal and posterior surfaces; apex of mid tibia with setae on dorsal, posterodorsal, posterior, posteroventral, ventral and anteroventral surfaces; hind femur with a complete row of dorsal and posteroventral setae; hind tibia with one submedian anterodorsal seta and three submedian anteroventral setae; hind tibia with anterodorsal, dorsal, posterodorsal, ventral and anteroventral setae at the apex; wing with one dorsal and one or two ventral setae at the apex of stem vein.

Abdomen: epandrium as higher than wide, without basal projection.

Female (differing as follows): Length. Body: 5.8–6.1 mm; wing: 6.2–6.5 mm; eyes separated from each other by 0.29–0.34 mm at level of ocellar tubercle; nine pairs of convergent frontal setae, except for top two pairs, which are parallel; ocellar and postocellar setae large and divergent; inner vertical seta large and convergent, and outer vertical seta large and divergent; apex of fore tibia with setae on anterodorsal, dorsal, posterodorsal and posteroventral surfaces; fore tibia with two submedian anteroventral setae; many ventral setae on segments VI and VII; ventral triangle-shaped sclerotization on segment VI; tergites VII sclerotized, touching each other; sternite VIII with spike-like setae; epiproct with four setae, the setae in a square-shaped arrangement (2:2).

Comments: N. goianensis has a variation in the acrostichal setae, which are either 0:1 or 1:1. The coloration of this species looks very similar to that of N. pictipennis nudinervis (Stein) , recorded from Mexico to Peru, except for the pattern of wing color. Lopes & Khouri (1995) suggested a close relationship of this species with N. mediana Snyder.
