Rhizomes pachymorph; culms hollow with thin walls, 1–4 m tall, 0.5–1 cm in diameter, erect to scandent; culm leaf sheaths well developed, persistent and long fimbriate; culm leaf blades pseudopetiolate, persistent and similar to the foliage leaf blades; branching intravaginal; node with one bud developing into 1 main branch subequal to the main culm; foliage leaf blades ovate, with long pseudopetioles and long fimbriae to 3 cm; synflorescences paniculate; spikelets long pedicellate; glumes and lemma glabrous; fruit a basic caryopsis.
1 species in Mexico: A. laxa . Endemic to Mexico; Chiapas, Guerrero and Veracruz; 1600–2700 m ( Fig. 2C–D View FIGURE 2 ) .
