Herbaceous, monoecious and cespitose plants; culms monomorph with several nodes, erect; leaves short petiolate, oblong-lanceolate, glabrous and sometimes abaxially purple; synflorescences terminal, racemose, with 5–10 staminate spikelets and one pistillate spikelet; axillary synflorescences paniculiform or racemiform, bisexual with 2–5 pistillate spikelets and 5–20 staminate spikelets.
