Type Locality: No locality cited; restricted to "plains of Peninsular India " (Lydekker, 1914 b:227) .
Vernacular Names: Nilgai.
Distribution: India, Nepal (Terai), and E Pakistan; introduced into Texas ( USA).
Conservation: IUCN – Least Concern.
Discussion: Antilope tragocamelus Pallas, 1766 , was based on accounts of the "tragelaphus" by Caius, Gesner and Ray and on Parsons' (1745) description of a male nilgai in London (here designated the lectotype), which had first been "brought to Bengal, from a very remote part of the Mogul's Dominions".
