Type Locality: Tanzania, Uluguru Mtns, Morningside.
Vernacular Names: Howell's Forest Shrew.

Subspecies Sylvisorex howelli subsp. usambarensis Hutterer 1986
Distribution: Eastern Arc Mtns ( Tanzania): W and E Usambara, Nguru and Uluguru Mtns (Stanley et al., 2000 b).
Conservation: IUCN – Vulnerable.
Discussion: Includes usambarensis, which may represent a distinct species; see Hutterer (1986 b). However, the variation among the five populations has to be studied before taxonomic conclusions can be drawn.
