Euthore Selys 1869 View in CoL

Relatively small damselflies compared to Cora and Polythore, with beautifully patterned wings from dark with white or yellow bands ( Fig. 56 View FIGURE 56 ), to hyaline with orange patches. Three of the six species are recorded for Ecuador with certainty; a fourth species possibly occurs. See Bick & Bick (1992) for identification. Habitat is mostly small, mountainous, forested streams; females require decaying wood for oviposition. Species of Euthore are rarely en- countered in the field.

Euthore fasciata Hagen in Selys, 1853 . Publ. Recs. ECU: *Selys (1873a—as E. plagiata ), McLachlan (1878), Selys (1879 —“a race of E. fasciata ”), Schmidt (1942 —as E. fasciata inlactea ), Tsuda (1986, 1991), Paulson (1983), Steinmann (1997a—as “ E. fasciata inlactea ”), (P11), (H14); MN: Bick & Bick (1992); MS: Bick & Bick (1992 — “ E. fasciata form plagiata ”); NA: Bick & Bick (1992). Note: The type locality for E. fasciata was listed as Venezuela (Hagen in Selys 1853). De Marmels (1988) speculated that the type locality was most likely Ecuador, although he found 10 different South American rivers named “Río Negro.” It is possible that the type locality was the Ecuadorian Río Negro, a tributary of the Río Pastaza which was accessible during the mid-19 th century and which fits into the probable range of this species.
