COENAGRIONIDAE “Protoneurinae” (Tillyard, 1917)

The Protoneurinae were long regarded as a distinct family, Protoneuridae , until recent molecular evidence indicated that the New World representatives fall within the Coenagrionidae ( Dijkstra et al. 2014) . The Old World members that were once included in the family Protoneuridae apparently are not closely related to the New World Protoneurinae clade and have been placed in the Platycnemididae . Adults of this Neotropical group are mostly extremely slen- der and have been dubbed “Threadtails.” The life cycle and biology of few species have been described. In Ecuador, seven genera and 23 named species have been recorded, plus there is at least one new species to be described and another of uncertain identification.
