Holotype. ♂, USA: Mississippi: Gainesville, 27.ix.1966, Khalaf [ LACM ENT 111684 View Materials ] ( USNM; examined).

Recognition. Two other species, D. conspicua and D. sarriae , are similar to D. mississippiensis , but both have a spinose concavity. The hind femur of D. buscki is superficially similar, but the concavity is less developed and the peglike setae are more separated from each other.

Brown & Kung (2007) mistakenly treated a specimen of D. conspicua under this name.

Description. Body length: 1.56–1.88 mm. Head: Frons dark brown, second row of setae slightly concave. Flagellomere 1 round, brown. Palpus of normal size, light brown. Thorax: Scutum brown. Scutellum brown, with 2 pairs of setae; anterior seta one-third length of posterior seta. Pleuron brown. Mean costal length 0.52 wing length, range 0.52–0.53. Halter yellow. Legs yellowish-brown. Forecoxa in lateral view yellowishbrown. Foretibia with 4 dorsal setae. Foretarsomeres slender, elongate. Midcoxa brown. Hind coxa yellowishbrown. Hind coxal lobe brown, short, decumbent. Posterior face of hind femur with single to double row of peglike setae well-separated from ventral margin of hind femur by large, imbricate lobe; more distally with large ventral concavity lacking spinuli ( Figs 121–122). Abdomen: Abdominal tergite 1 dark brown, tergites 2- 6 dark brown. Venter of abdomen light brown, with few setae, larger on posterior margin of segment 5. Male terminalia with epandrium yellowish-brown, hypandrium brown, and cercus yellow.

Distribution. Southeastern USA, Costa Rica, and Mexico.

Other material examined. 6♂ specimens from the following localities: COSTA RICA: Puntarenas: Monteverde, 3 km SW Rincon. MEXICO: Quintana Roo: Felipe Carrillo Pto. USA: Florida: Monticello; North Carolina: Raleigh ( EMUS, LACM) .
