Diagnosis

Helcystogramma brevinodium sp. nov. is distinguishable from other species of the triannulella group by the third segment of the labial palpus about one-third length of second, and the aedeagus not hooked apically but with a small process near apex in the male genitalia. It is similar to H. arotraeum (Meyrick) by the valva slightly narrowed medially and shorter than the tegumen–uncus complex, but differs from it in the forewing with the colour on costal margin and along veins the same as the ground colour, and the lobes of vinculum bluntly rounded dorsoapically in the male genitalia.

Description

Adult ( Figures 4B View Figure 4 , 8F View Figure 8 ): Wingspan 15.0 mm. Head yellowish-brown. Antenna with scape yellowish-brown on dorsal surface, yellowish-white on ventral surface; flagellum alternately greyish-brown and dark brown on dorsal surface, ochreous on ventral surface. Labial palpus with second segment about three times length of diameter of eye, third segment short, about one-third length of second; yellowishbrown except yellowish-white on dorsal surface. Thorax and tegula ochreous-brown. Forewing with costal margin straight, dorsum slightly protruding at two-thirds length, apex bluntly rounded, termen oblique, straight; ground colour ochreous-brown, mottled brown scales distally, with brown spot near end of cell; fringe yellowish-brown except yellowish-white basally on termen. Hindwing grey; fringe pale grey except greyish-white at base. Fore- and midlegs yellowish-brown on outer surface, femora and tibiae ochreous and tarsi pale brown on inner surface; hindleg yellow on outer surface, pale yellow on inner surface.

Male genitalia

Uncus somewhat narrow rectangular, narrowest at one-third length, bluntly rounded on posterior margin, with sparse setae on dorsal surface and spicules on ventral surface; about one-third length of valva ( Figure 12D View Figure 12 ). Gnathos slightly curved near base; culcitula broad trapeziform, almost straight posteriorly. Valva slightly narrowed mesially, bluntly rounded apically, shorter than tegumen–uncus complex; ventral free lobe narrowed gradually from base to bluntly rounded apex, with sparse long setae. Vinculum with lobes sharp ventroapically, bluntly rounded dorsoapically. Aedeagus ellipsoidal in basal two-fifths, narrowed gradually in distal three-fifths, with a small, apex-rounded subapical process. Eighth tergite broadly triangular, anterior margin concave on mesial half, posterior margin rounded ( Figure 10I View Figure 10 ).

Female

Unknown.

Distribution

China (Hebei, Tianjin).

Etymology

The specific name is derived from the Latin brevinodius, meaning short, referring to the relatively short third segment of the labial palpus.
